As Shanti's faith curdles and a handful of dissenters begin to suspect the truth about what the Chosen really are, the church and the plant move to crush them. D'Lacey wrote a fierce, gory parable about industrial meat that earned a public endorsement from Stephen King and a long afterlife in horror circles.
