The Player of Games
Part of Iain M. Banks's Culture series, The Player of Games follows Jernau Morat Gurgeh, one of the greatest game players in the post-scarcity, AI-guided civilization known as the Culture. Bored and restless, Gurgeh is drawn into a mission to a distant empire called Azad, where an enormously complex game determines social rank and even who becomes emperor. As Gurgeh learns the game, he is forced to confront the empire's cruelty and the contrast between its hierarchy and the Culture's open society. The novel works as both a sharp, satisfying contest and a study of politics, power, and how the games people play reflect the values of their world, and it is often recommended as the best place to begin reading Banks's Culture novels.
