The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating
Bedridden by a mysterious viral illness that left her unable to sit up or leave her room for long stretches, Elisabeth Tova Bailey received an unexpected gift from a visiting friend, a wild snail placed in a pot of violets on her nightstand. With little else she could do, she began to watch it. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating grows out of that watching. Bailey weaves the natural history of snails, their biology, habits, and long evolutionary story, together with her own suspended life inside four walls. The snail becomes a companion and a teacher, a way to measure time and presence when illness has stripped away every other marker. The book is a short, luminous study of attention, patience, and what remains meaningful when a life contracts to a single room.
